The Story of a Life Saved »»»

“If it weren’t for Narcan,
I wouldn’t be here.”
-Deputy Farrell

In April 2022, two Ashland County deputies were exposed to the potent drug, fentanyl. Both deputies began to overdose. Without Narcan, the deputies might not be here today. Here’s their powerful story and testimony to the value of Narcan to save lives.

How To Use Narcan

What Is Narcan?

Narcan saves lives.
Narcan is a medication that can reverse an opioid overdose. It works by blocking the effects of opioids and can restore breathing within minutes. It is safe, easy to use, and will not harm someone if opioids are not present.

Why Narcan Matters

Anyone can help save a life.
Overdoses can happen quickly and unexpectedly. Many involve prescription pills or substances that contain fentanyl, even when someone does not realize it. Having Narcan nearby gives families, friends, and bystanders a chance to act before emergency responders arrive. You do not need medical training to carry or use Narcan.

Signs of an Opioid Overdose

It is always better to act.
If you are unsure, use Narcan and call 911 if someone shows any of these signs:

  • Slow, shallow, or stopped breathing
  • Blue or gray lips and fingernails
  • Unconsciousness or inability to wake
  • Gurgling or choking sounds
  • Cold or clammy skin
